Unlike newly manufactured matched glass beads, this strand brings together individual beads showing differences in pattern, coloration, wear and construction.
Many feature bold longitudinal stripes and feathered or zigzag transitions characteristic of historical polychrome cane-work glass traditions. The assortment reflects the long circulation of imported glass beads through West African trade networks and their subsequent use, collection and preservation within African material culture.

Cultural Material Note
European glass beads circulated extensively through West Africa and became incorporated into regional traditions of adornment, exchange and material culture. In Ghana and elsewhere, imported beads could also be retained, reused, restrung and sometimes physically modified by local beadworkers.
